“Queen of the Air” at Cricklewood station pays tribute to the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930.

Lakwena Maciver was commissioned by Cricklewood Town Team alongside Govia Thameslink Railways to paint a mural honouring Amy Johnson.

The artist used the pilot’s “Queen of the Air” nickname, given by the British press, and recreated it in bright colours.

Amy was a typist before gaining her pilot’s licence. She set a string of records inspired by the biplanes she saw using the Stag Lane Aerodrome.

Her blue plaque, awarded by English Heritage in 1987, is at Vernon Court, Hendon Way, where she lived for 14 years before she moved to Roe Green, Kingsbury.

The mural is one of 20 curated by Tate Collective to mark 100 years since some women won the right to vote. The piece is intended to capture the mythical nature of the aviator’s life and inspire people to explore her story.
