My Head is Perfumed was the title of a poem in a book of poems by the Congolese poet Tchicaya U Tam’si called Brush Fire (originally published as Feu de brousse) that Ibrahim was asked to illustrate when he went to Nigeria in the early 1960s. The image stayed in his head a long time, and eventually resulted in this work.
