Ibrahim El-Salahi | Vigo Gallery, London
Now 95, and a former public servant and diplomat, Sudanese painter Ibrahim El-Salahi is a pioneering figure in African and Arab modernism. His solo presentation with Vigo Gallery features works from 1954 to 1957, when he was studying at London’s Slade School of Fine Art. ‘Pre-Pixel’ centres on a period of radical experimentation where El-Salahi began dismantling the conventions of representation in search of a new visual language. Landscapes dissolve into chromatic grids, portraiture is reconstructed through geometric compression and abstraction emerges from fragmentation.
